Abreu Saga Continues
Two Springs ago, Tony Abreu played so well in place of an injured Rafael Furcal that he nearly made the Major League club. But his career has been sidetracked by injuries ever since and manager Joe Torre said Tuesday he expects Abreu to open the season at Triple-A. Leading candidates for utility infield roles are Mark Loretta, Blake DeWitt, Juan Castro and Doug Mientkievicz. Abreu has been slowed this Spring coming off operations for a sports hernia and torn hip labrum. Torre met with Abreu while his teammates were going through their morning workouts. — Ken Gurnick
Manny Still on for Thursday
Manager Joe Torre said Tuesday he still plans for Manny Ramirez to make his Spring debut Thursday in an exhibition against WBC qualifier Team Korea. Torre said it wasn’t yet determined if Ramirez will play left field or be the designated hitter.
Torre also said Hong-Chih Kuo and Cory Wade are on schedule to make their first “A” game appearance Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Both have been protected with a slow schedule while nursing a tender elbow and shoulder, respectively.
Schlichting Hurt
Pitching prospect Travis Schlichting, who aggravated his back injury fielding a comebacker during a scoreless inning in Monday’s “B” game, was limping noticeably Tuesday and said he was scheduled for an MRI. — Ken Gurnick
Kuo, Schlichting Throw Zeroes
Rehabbing pitchers Hong-Chih Kuo and Travis Schlichting threw 12-pitch scoreless innings Monday in a morning “B” game against the White Sox. Kuo, expected to be a key part of the Dodgers’ bullpen, has been babying his delicate elbow. Schlichting, a highly regarded young right-hander, has been slowed by back spasms. Ramon Troncoso started the game and allowed two runs in two innings. — Ken Gurnick
