Paul Gets the Call
The Dodgers recalled outfielder Xavier Paul to replace the suspended Manny Ramirez. Paul was batting .344 with nine doubles, two homers and 14 RBIs in 25 games at Triple-A Albuquerque. He was 8-for-10 in steals. He’ll wear No. 3. — Ken Gurnick

Abreu Activated
Tony Abreu has returned from his latest injury and reported to Double-A Chattanooga. Abreu, who missed last year with hip surgery, suffered a bad ankle sprain the last week of Spring Training. — Ken Gurnick
Kuroda Tosses, But Not for Long
For the third consecutive day, disabled pitcher Hiroki Kuroda played catch on flat ground in the outfield with trainer Stan Conte, but the session stopped after only a handful of throws. Kuroda said he was told to cut it off and preserve himself for Thursday, when he would throw farther with more intensity. Manager Joe Torre said if Kuroda’s progress continues, he could be only days away from starting to throw from a mound. Kuroda has been disabled since April 7 with a strained oblique muscle. — Ken Gurnick
Schlichting Returns
Right-handed reliever Travis Schlichting, limited to one perfect inning in a “B” game this Spring because of a bulging disk in his lower back, saw his first game action Tuesday night with 2 2/3 innings of perfect relief for Double-A Chattanooga. Before he was injured, Schlichting was considered by some in the organization as having a chance to help the Major League club before the season is over. — Ken Gurnick
Torre Says Bullpen Ready
Manager Joe Torre said only Cory Wade is unavailable for Tuesday night’s Dodgers game against Arizona. Jeff Weaver will start for the Dodgers with a pitch-count target of 75, meaning Torre is likely to go to the bullpen early. His long man will be James McDonald, whose place in the rotation Weaver is taking.
Torre also said Jason Schmidt threw 100 pitches in an extending Spring Training game Monday, will have a bullpen session Wednesday, and that could lead to a Minor League rehab assignment. — Ken Gurnick
Triple Play Doubled
The triple-play that Casey Blake hit into wasn’t the only one involving the Dodgers organization Monday night. The club’s Single-A affiliate at Great Lakes turned a triple-play in its game against Beloit Monday, but lost, 5-1. — Ken Gurnick
Kuroda Tosses Again
Opening Day starter Hiroki Kuroda played catch in the outfield with trainer Stan Conte Tuesday for the second consecutive day, a modestly positive sign for the pitcher who has been disabled for a month with a strained oblique muscle. That said, Kuorda still isn’t throwing hard nor has he taken a mound, which will be followed by bullpen sessions, live batting practice and a Minor League rehab assignment. In other words, a late-May return is probably a best-case scenario. — Ken Gurnick
Mazone Activated at Albuquerque, Sturtze Released
Two Dodgers relievers that nearly made the club this Spring headed in different directions Friday. Left-hander Brian Mazone, who had the best Spring stats in camp but was sidelined by an abcess on his buttock, has been activated at Triple-A Albuquerque. Right-hander Tanyon Sturtze, who has pitched well at Albuquerque, was given his release after Jeff Weaver was promoted to Los Angeles instead of Sturtze. — Ken Gurnick
Pierre Bats Ninth
The Dodgers lineup for Wednesday night against the Giants has pitcher Eric Stults batting eighth and Juan Pierre batting ninth and starting in center field for Matt Kemp. — Ken Gurnick
